"Vera was sick.
She had spots all over her body, even between her toes and inside her ears. The doctor said she must stay in bed."
Vera is sick. Mother puts her in the spare room and rubs lotion on all her spots. She brings in Vera's favorite pillow and tells her to try and sleep. But the sickroom is lonely and kind of scary. The wallpaper looks like it's making funny faces at Vera, and try as she might, she can't fall asleep. All Vera can do is scratch her spots.

Vera Rosenberry is the author and illustrator of four books about Vera and the illustrator of The Bug Cemetery by Frances Hill. Ms. Rosenberry lives in Cambridgeshire, England, with her husband.
