From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Pencil annotation on endpaper, slight staining on edge, otherwise very good and clean. / Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatzblatt, leichte Anschmutzung auf dem Schnitt, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, was the greatest Royalist statesman of the seventeenth century and the first of the great English historians. A member of the intellectual elite associated with Great Tew, and accounted a reformer in the Long Parliament, he became a trusted minister of Charles I, and did everything in his power to dissuade the king from following the course of action which led to his execution. To him the Stuarts owed their restoration in 1660, and he did much to mould the present character of the Church of England. During fourteen years of exile he guided the fortunes of the royalist cause during its darkest days. Clarendon applied to the history of the English civil war a profound historical philosophy and a remarkable degree of detachment. Horace Walpole's judgment has stood the test of time: 'His majesty and eloquence, his power of painting characters, his knowledge of his subject, rank him in the first class of writers'. This is the first full biography of Clarendon for nearly 150 years. It provides a clear and persuasive account of his life and thought, based on Clarendon's writings, letters and papers. It relates to it, with great skill, the main events of some forty of the most dramatic and important years in English history. The portrait which emerges is of a warm and humorous character, with a serious and moral view of life and politics. The author has done full justice to a man, who, according to Hugh Trevor-Roper, 'turned the course of history and made his philosophy come true'. - R. W. HARRIS, the author of some seven books on historical subjects, was for many years head of the history department at the King's School, Canterbury. This biography of Clarendon is the result of eight years' research, and has been completed with the aid of an award from the Leverhulme Foundation, and a Studentship at Christ Church, Oxford.
