And then, wish to thought to deed, it has dominated my working life as well, being drawn to artists, musicians, writers, dancers-antennae of the race if not makers of its civilization. How did I get that way? Inhibitions against sensory experience start early in life: Don't. Don't feed the animals, don't walk on the grass, don't touch the object, and surely not the person. As a helpless nonadult, a child either accedes or rebels, but grows, grows up, in spite of prohibitions: by hook or by crook. I grew up, more or less, overreacting against rules and regulations imposed by any authority, however well-meaning, however necessary the rules might have seemed to be-might, in fact, to this day seem to be. Clearly, such prohibi- tions, whether against touching the glass vase or smoking pot or reading pornographic novels or whatever, only heighten curiosity and, at their best, encourage further experimentation.
