This guide, compiled by the Early Childhood Development Center in New York City from the proceedings of parent training groups, addresses these vexing questions plus others that beset real parents in their ongoing interactions with real toddlers. The tone is unusually appealing, as the authors neither criticize nor patronize unsure caretakers, and the approach is openminded, with much data targeted to single working parents, fathers, and grandparents. Previous volumes in this series, The First Year of Life and The Second Year of Life (both Walker, 1991. rev. ed.), were also updated to contain more information on single fathers and working mothers. The bibliography is a useful historical survey of the parenting literature.
