How can we address some of the situations that plague African-American men? Matthew Parker takes an in-depth look at the various challenges and issues African-American men face as they grow up. Divided into decades of a man's life, Parker offers this exhortation: 'make sure that our children and grandchildren and protgs form, like the faithful few who remained true to the one God of Israel, a remnant of those who have gained godly wisdom.' Parker does an excellent job of including case studies of churches and organizations that are effectively teaching and reaching African-American men. CASE STUDIES: The first study focuses on prisons. There are 34 sentenced African American male inmates per 1,000 African American men in the United States, versus only 4 sentenced white male inmates per 1,000 white men.The second covers a comprehensive curriculum to address the needs of African American males (men, boys and fathers) in the church.The third covers an innovative program to reach adolescents via an intensive, long-term, small group process.
