With the number of candidates for organ transplants far outstripping the organs available from cadavers declared brain-dead while their hearts continue to beat, 19 papers explore the potential for preserving the viability of organs from cadavers whose hearts have stopped. The two approaches to reducing damage caused by the lack of blood flow are in-situ preservation using cold perfusant after a patient dies unexpectedly, and the rapid retrieval of organs after life-support is discontinued in controlled settings.
