Drawing from primary documents, explores the mechanisms of the secular legal system in early 15th-century Florence, and how they were linked to the development of a territorial state and to the struggle between republican institutions and the emerging oligarchy. Concludes that the centralized state bureaucracy was strong enough to resist the oligarchy for longer than is generally thought. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
