Alzheimer's disease is a devastating disease which affects both patient and family. Though there is no cure, it is becoming increasingly clear that patients with Alzheimer's disease are not beyond help. This book was written in response to a request from caregivers in the community - individuals who care for victims at home and health care professionals who look after patients in nursing homes. This book provides clinical presentation and diagnosis, covers management of specific problems such as safety, urinary incontinence, nutrition, and hygiene, and contains special therapies used by nurses and physicians. It also incorporates case studies and recent modifications to care as well as more traditional care techniques. Features new to this second edition include: updated glossary which provides current information; expanded coverage of essential topics such as Alzheimer research organisations, specialised units, promising areas of research, increased drug information; division of the drug management chapter into two specialised units - psychopharmacology in dementia and specific therapy; increased number of tables and boxes, highlighting important information in each chapter.
