Zustand: Sehr gut. XIV, 200 p., ill. From the estate of Kurt Scheel, German publicist. - Slightly damaged jacket, somewhat stained top edge, otherwise very good and clean. - Contents: Preface -- 1 Postwar / Post-Holocaust / Postmodern: Some Reflections on the Discourses of Mourning -- 2 Germany and the Tasks of Mourning in the Second and Third Generations -- 3 Screen Memories Made in Germany: Edgar Reitz's Heimat and the Question of Mourning -- 4 Allegories of Grieving: The Films of Hans Jürgen Syberberg. - What does it mean to identify oneself as "German" forty-five years after the Final Solution and the end of the Third Reich? How can one embrace a cultural heritage that both is continuous with and has been ruptured by Auschwitz? How, if at all, are the moral, political, and psychological burdens of direct or indirect complicity in genocide passed on from one generation to another? In Stranded Objects, Eric L. Santner addresses these issues by developing a theory of mourning that articulates the complex question of identity formation in post-Holocaust Germany and in postmodern society more generally. Focusing primarily on the Federal Republic of Germany, Santner shows how issues of bereavement and an "inability to mourn" continue to affect the political and social character of contemporary German society. Santner discusses Tiaueiaibeit or the "work of mourning," an idea first set forth by Alexander and Margarete Mitscherlich two decades ago. Tiaueiaibeit, Santner maintains, is a labor of memory and recon-stitution, and involves "recollecting the stranded objects of cultural inheritance." In West Germany this cultural inheritance fragmented by the horrors of the Holocaustis marked by dispersion, loss, shame, and moral and psychological disorientation. Santner then discusses more general questions about the ways in which an "inability to mourn" has become a structural feature of all Western societies and may in fact be central to the postmodern condition. Stranded Objects gives detailed, close readings of two of the most important German films of the 1970s and 1980s: Hans Jürgen Syberberg's Out Hitler and Edgar Reitz's Heimat. For Santner, these films represent the two most sustained recent efforts by German artists to create works of national elegiac art, works that use the resources of mourning in the service of reconstituting German self-identity after the catastrophes of recent history. He addresses in these chapters the contradictions and double-binds that postwar German filmmakersand postwar German audiencesmust face when confronting the Nazi past. In addition, he offers a highly provocative analysis of the debate over Paul de Man's wartime writings. Stranded Objects sets forth a psychoanalytically oriented theory of mourning which can be applied to works of literature, film, historiography, and criticism. It will be welcomed by all readers concerned with contemporary German culture, cultural history, critical theory, and film. - ERIC L. SANTNER is Assistant Professor in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Princeton University. He is the author of Friedrich Hölderlin: Narrative Vigilance and the Poetic Imagination. ISBN 9780801423444 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 536 Original hardcover with dust jacket.
