Series: Harvard Dissertations in Religion, 28. ?This volume assesses the relationship of the emperor Trajan to the gods by examining the works of Pliny, especially his ?paneygiricus?, and the imperial coins, epigrams, and monuments of the period. Pliny insisted that Trajan was not a god but that he was uniquely connected with the gos in a relationship of mutual responsibility and accountability. The numismatic evidence shows the importance of nontextual material for study of the ancient world, and provides a mixed picture of Trajan?s reign and variegated portrayal of the relationship between the emperor and the gods. This is a rather technical book, of use primarily to specialists on the early church. The 32 pages of coins, epigrams, and monuments enhance the study.? (DON S.
