Richard C. Davids lived in Bob Childress' country when he was researching and writing The Man Who Moved a Mountain. He talked to Bob's widow, his children, his brother Hasten, classmates from Union Seminary, and hundreds of the mountain people Bob had served. The result is a vivid portrayal of characters, incidents, and the mountains themselves.

Bob Childress, the subject of this biography. xii+ 253 pp. Biography of Robert Walter "Bob" Childress (c 1889-1956), the Presbyterian minister who became known in the Southern Appalachain region for his work in promoting education and transforming the area's tradition of violence. Childress was born in "The Hollow" (Ararat, Virginia), a remote Buffalo Mountain area that was plagued by ignorance, alcoholism, and violence, growing up in the Primitve Baptist tradition. Virtually unschooled, Childress himself resorted to violence and alcohol but after witnessing a massacre at a courthouse turned to law enforcement. After regularly attending a Presbyterian church, he decided to become a minister. Through 30 years in the ministry, he built and led congregations at six famous "Rock Churches". His own autobiography was unpublished but Richard C. Davids, who had personally known Rev.
