Grade 3-6–This slim, approachable update to the 1999 edition groups the states into five regions and prefaces each one with a six-page overview of the area, its general features, notable cultural landmarks, and includes many full-color photographs. Maps of the individual states follow, along with a brief summary and fact box for each one. They show major cities and towns, physical features, economic factors, and major highways, as well as less common points of interest such as population centers and presidential birthplaces. An additional section gives similar information for the territories of the U.S. Front matter includes a variety of overview maps of the country, such as a physical map, one of federal lands, a political map, and another showing racial and ethnic representation in various locations. The volume concludes with a brief glossary, a "Facts and Figures" page, a list of state abbreviations, and an excellent index. With full-color photographs and mostly intuitive symbols, its design is ideal for beginning users. Unfortunately, the grid outlines on the map of Kentucky are inexplicably missing, making it difficult to navigate.–Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia
