Reviewed with Diana Noonan's The Kangaroo.
Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. With bright color photos and short text on every page, each of these small, square books in the Life Cycles series introduces young readers to an animal in the wild. Noonan very briefly describes the animal's physical characteristics, habitat, food, breeding cycle, and its predators, animal and human. crocodile mentions the threat of hunters. The book on the kangaroo includes a beautiful sequence showing a tiny newborn climbing into its mother's pouch, feeding on her milk, and then, months later, learning to hop on its strong back legs. Each book ends with a glossary and a summary in words and pictures of the animal's life cycle. The clear, photo-essay format makes this an attractive series for group sharing as well as for first science reports. Hazel Rochman
