In time for the year 2000, DK has updated its Ultimate Visual Dictionary (LJ 12/94). When this stunning visual dictionary was first published, LJ named it one of the best reference works of the year. Covering over 30,000 terms in 270 major entries, it is divided into 14 sections, ranging from prehistoric life to architecture to music. A detailed index provides access to the entries, and the book's beautiful photographs and illustrations make it an enjoyable as well as an educational resource. The updated edition adds 1500 new terms and 22 major entries to the original text; most of the new entries focus on technology and recent events and include visual guides to interactive television, a recently excavated dinosaur named Gigantosaurus, and the new Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Inconveniently, though, these additions haven't been integrated into the original material. They appear in a separate section at the front of the book, along with their own table of contents and index; the unchanged text of the original volume comes afterward.
