Readers at Risk is designed to provide grade-level-appropriate material for struggling special education students and for students who are testing below their grade level. Many of the book's vocabulary building activities are designed to build students' confidence and include easy-to-identify answers in the form of questions or quotations. Readers at Risk focuses on nonfiction and testing prompts, taught with engaging crossword puzzles and fun magic squares. It makes the reading experience and word play more enjoyable for exceptional students without creating more paperwork for teachers.

Readers at Risk includes a wide range of activities across the curriculum on topics appealing to high school readers.

Section One: Building Words contains thirty-two activities covering topics such as recognizing words, spelling, plurals, clauses, prefixes, roots, and suffixes.

Section Two: Making Sense with Words includes seventeen activities centered on ways to learn about idioms, expressions, antonyms, connotations, vocabulary, homophones, and paraphrasing.

Section Three: Becoming a Better Reader offers twenty-three activities on subjects including key words, mood, facts and opinions, word sense, tone, cloze reading, cause and effect, anticipating events, subtopics, and sequence.

Section Four: Reading Comprehension in Math and Science Classes consists of twenty-eight activities concerning science reading comprehension on fascinating topics such as crocodiles, sharks, global warming, and tornados.

Section Five: Reading Comprehension in Social Studies Classes includes sixteen activities on themes including civil disobedience, the Black Death, and the Tower of London.

Section Six: Reading Comprehension in Biography and Current Affairs offers twenty-three activities about such well- known figures as Superman, Harry Houdini, Lance Armstrong, and Jackie Robinson.

Section Seven: Reading Comprehension in Language Arts Classes contains twenty-one activities on literary subjects ranging from Shakespearean works to a story about J. K. Rowling.
