From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed, allover very good and clean. / Leicht berieben, insgesamt sehr gut und sauber. - INTRODUCTION: The Arabic language has today assumed the status of an international language. With the emergence of sovereign Arab States in Asia and Africa, interest is evinced in this language by people living in the four corners of the world. It is unique that Arabic, though a classical language, is good enough for an age whose scientific and political vocabulary is increasingly expanding. Time has not driven it into oblivion as it has done in the case of many a mighty tongue, nor has it undergone any drastic change during its more than fourteen centuries of existence. On the other hand, it has revitalized itself and become more popular with the passage of time. As Philip K. Hitti has remarked, "For many centuries in the Middle Ages it (Arabic) was the language of learning and culture and progressive thought throughout the civilized world. Between the ninth and twelfth centuries more works, philosophical, medical, historical, religious, astronomical and geographical were produced through the medium of Arabic than through any other language." The European languages are indebted to Arabic for part of their vocabulary, idiom and diction. The Oxford English Dictionary reveals the fact that a vast number of English words are of Arabic origin. Its alphabet has been adopted by Persian, Pushtu, Urdu, Sindhi, Turkish, Malay and several other oriental languages. This volume introduces Arabic to those who wish to learn it through the English medium. This book does not pretend to cover all the finer points of this language, nor does it deal with the principles of grammar exhaustively. Most of the lessons have as their heading a grammatical term. The vocabulary lists of these lessons include the words used in the illustrative texts and the model sentences. In these lists, the plural form of nouns is indicated after a dash, the synonyms after a colon and the imperfect verb forms are shown with the past tense forms. Translation of one language into another always gives rise to certain difficulties emanating from the distinctive thought forms and cultural patterns. Literal translation is often unidiomatic. I have tried to bring the translation of Arabic expressions as close to the originals as possible. In the second part of this edition I have added selections from modern Arabic prose and poetry by eminent Arab writers of various countries, including those who had migrated to America and represent different schools of thought. This would be of use to university students in the non-Arab world. The student is advised to read Arabic newspapers and journals and listen to Arabic programs broadcast from various regions in order to keep himself abreast of the latest trends in Arabic literature. It is by no means an easy task to attain mastery over Arabic language, but dedication and sustained effort do produce results. ISBN 9780781808415 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
