Jürgen Domes (1932-2001), was from 1967 to 1975 Director of the Research Unit for Chinese and East Asian Politics at the Free University of Berlin, and from 1969 Professor of Political Science. In 1975 he became Professor and Director of a similar, newly-founded Unit at the University of Saarbrücken. He made many extended research trips to East Asia since 1962, and is the author of several major books, which include The Internal Politics of China 1949-1972 (London: Hurst-New York: Praeger, 1973) and China after the Cultural Revolution (London: Hurst-Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1976).
