Cuthbert Bede, or the Reverend Edward Bradley, was a mid-19th century rural cleric in England and author of The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green (1853-57) and Photographic Pleasures (1855), the first book devoted to photographic humor. In this volume, H. Henisch (history, emeritus, Penn State U.) and B. Henisch (former lecturer in medieval English, U. of Reading, UK) provide a lively biography of Bede, as well as an insightful portrait of the cultural atmosphere in which he lived and worked. Includes some 50 b&w reproductions of Bede's cartoons. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
