Beeson, an opera composer, presents his autobiography, which incorporates discussion of how he composed and produced his operas. He recounts his childhood, musical education, studies with Bela Bartók, and other aspects of his life, in addition to his career composing 10 operas, including Lizzie Borden, Cyrano, Hello Out There, and Dr. Heidegger's Fountain's of Youth. Jack Beeson began piano lessons at age 7: at 12 he was seduced by the earliest Met broadcasts, decided he would become an opera composer, and wrote three librettos. Born in 1921 in Muncie, Indiana, he became an untypical teenager in what was to become known as Middletown, "the typical American city." He studied at the Eastman School of Music and Columbia University and, uniquely, with Bela Bartok. He has written 10 operas, widely produced and televised here and in Europe.
