This first in-depth examination of the life and work of Gerald Trottier (1925 – 2004) discusses over fifty years of production, including the early Social Realist works, the “Medieval period” of the 1950s, the imposing expressionist paintings he exhibited at the 8th São Paulo Biennial in 1965, and the realist paintings he made in the mid-1960s. Trottier’s innovative liturgical design work is also explored in detail. The essay concludes by considering two major bodies of monumental paintings Trottier made late in his career – his self-portraits and his Easter Series.
