James S. Howland holds degrees from the University of Florida, the California Institute of Technology and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.' He is Professor Emeritus, and former chair of Mathematics at the University of Virginia.He is the author of over 50 papers in the field of functional analysis and mathematical physics, and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Mathematical Physics and the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications.The author is currently Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL.'
