Grade 6-9-From the arresting title page that shows the guards at the Lenin Mausoleum, to the recipe for cabbage pie at the end, this title provides a well-written look at Russian history and culture up to the present day. The narrative, though hardly pleasure reading, is nicely composed and almost poetic at times. Especially welcome is the lengthy section on the arts. Occasionally, Torchinsky glosses over problems-e.g., he mentions general religious persecution, but neglects to discuss the history of pogroms. Lake Baikal is discussed, but the fact that it is polluted is not addressed. The high-quality, full-color photographs and reproductions are crisply printed, well composed, and perfectly placed. The bibliography, however, lists only five titles; the index and glossary are adequate. Abraham Resnick's The Commonwealth of Independent States (Childrens, 1993) covers much of the same ground, but less stylishly and in less detail. While Torchinsky's book will be primarily used for reports, its illustrations will attract browsers.
