Cuthell's (U. of Huddersfield, UK) text is based on a six-year study of 1800 students, conducted at a comprehensive school in West Yorkshire in the 1990s. The author explores student attitudes toward using computers for schoolwork and the perceived benefits, student perceptions of the mind and how it works, student perceptions of how they learn, and teacher use of and attitudes toward computers. The results show significant differences in computer use by teachers and their students, and differences in how computers are used for educational purposes at home and at school. Cuthell raises important questions about the educational disadvantages of students without a home computer, and the need to incorporate more effective uses of computers in the school environment.
