Paintings and sculpture by Watts (1817-1904) were written off by the Bloomsbury modernist tradition as an impossible concoction of the classical and the demotic, the heroic and the sentimental, the amorphous and the capricious, and critics have continued to confine him to the shadows of the late-Victorian art world. How Watts should be exposed to scrutiny is one of the main themes running through these nine essays by British art historians on transfiguring the Wattsian body and determining the Wattsian space. Among their specific topics are the pointless meaningfulness of his work, the physicality of sculpture, the Hall of Fame and the National Portrait Gallery, and schemes of painting in the 1840s.
