Patti Barber has been a primary school teacher, and a deputy head teacher. A lecturer at The University of London's Institute of Education, she is responsible for elementary mathematics curriculum development. Her publications include Nursery Mathematics and Foundation Mathematics.

PreSchool-Grade 1-This book explores such concepts as counting, numbers, sequencing, pairs, most and least, longest and shortest, and shapes. Each double-page spread begins with a simple direction or question such as: "Can you see which is longer?" The minimal text is straightforward, and the cartoon illustrations of simple shapes in bright colors boldly outlined in black provide clear examples for exploring each concept. A question at the bottom of each page encourages children to take the concept a step further or relate it to everyday life. "Suggestions for parents" offers advice on how to encourage children and make math interesting. A good introduction that is suitable for one-on-one sharing.

Aspiring mathematicians learn about numbers and basic mathematical concepts in First Number Book by Patty Barber, illus. by Mandy Stanley. A variety of tasks such as, "Count the sides on each shape," "How many wheels can you see?" and "Can you count 15 of one thing?" utilize numbers up to 20. Other spreads ask children to look at numbers in familiar settings (e.g., "Are there enough for the party?" and "In what order do you get dressed?") Includes suggestions for parents and a poster.

Ages 2-6. This colorful counting guide is a good book to use with children of different skill levels, and it will also work well as a child's skills advance. It is packed with exercises in counting, addition, subtraction, number placement, and fractions. Barber encourages children to relate numbers to everyday life while having fun. She also challenges kids to combine various mathematical concepts by asking them, for example, to count the sides of each shape or recognize the longest object in a picture. Each exercise has instructions clearly printed at the top of the page; a second set of instructions, for more advanced counters, appears at the bottom of the page. The bold, lively illustrations are definite attention grabbers. A helpful letter to adults suggests ways to use the book. Cynthia Turnquest
