Anna has just turned thirty, has secured a partnership in her law firm and is expecting her first baby. Her life should be complete, but it isn't. Just after her baby girl is born, she finds out that husband Max has been having an affair. She takes off with the baby, in an emotional turmoil, with a nanny she has hired to an empty villa in Portugal for a couple of weeks.

She meets Will Turner, single, charming, attractive and wealthy but with a strange past. On her return to England, not able to return to her home and Max, Will offers her a place to live. When she arrives at his large rambling country house, she finds the past is really very frightening.
