From the wild Highlands of Scotland to the bustling streets of Darlington, this enchanting family saga brings to life a vast cast of vivid characters: John McKie: he leaves the highlands in search of prosperity in the south and painstakingly builds his fortune, establishing his young brother Davie on the road to success. But luck in money is rarely accompanied by personal happiness... Mary Hamilton: shy and sweet-natured, she is in desperate trouble when she walks into John's life, pregnant and alone. The devotion she feels when he saves her from shame grows quickly into love. But can she ever make him forget her past? Charlotte Forest: her early hardships have shaped her into a proud and wilful woman. The courtship of handsome Davie McKie meets with success, but can a woman of Charlotte's independent nature find true happiness in marriage and children? Only time will tell... Written with enormous warmth and gentle humour, THE FAR SIDE OF THE HILL is an utterly absorbing saga of life at the turn of the century.
