When, in June 1916, thirteen-year old Jim Body joined the Great Northern Railway he began what would become over a century of family railway service. Over his life, and those of his son Geoff and his grandson Ian, the era of legendary steam on the main line was to give way to a host of major changes and pass on to the dawn of a new high-speed railway. This book follows and records three very different careers and brings to life the countless incidents and adventures these true railwaymen encountered from wartime through the many changes on Britain s railways and into the modern age, providing a lively human, social and historic picture of the massive changes in railway life they experienced.
