Complementary Medicine has undoubtedly become 'big business' with a high percentage of the general population using one or more forms of complementary therapy. More and more institutions are training would-be practitioners and users of Complementary Medicine are prepared to pay considerable sums out of their own pocket for treatment. Also, an increasing number of health insurance companies are willing to take over some of the costs for alternative methods of treatment. This growing interest in Complementary Medicine is also reflected in the literature: since 1966 there has been a six-fold increase in the number of Complementary Medicine-related publications in mainstream medical journals. Complementary Medicine: an objective appraisal consists of ten contributions by experts from various countries, each of whom looks critically and constructively at a fundamental aspect of the subject. This book is not specific to a particular country, nor is it confined to specific therapies. It is not written solely by doctors or by lay practitioners. It does, however, provide balanced and informed views on fundamental, general issues within Complementary Medicin
