The "Starting Science" series is designed to make science themes come alive through a combination of full-page impact photographs with commentary for discussion, activities and investigations in which the children are involved and background information further linking pictures and activities into each chapter's topic. Each book in the series provides an introduction to science enquiry methods. In using them the teacher will find they are involving the other core subjects of language and maths. Through the activities and investigations, the children use a variety of ways to explore the world around them and to record their discoveries. The activities and investigations are closely related to children's early experiences and can be used flexibly, depending on their ability. They are designed to be easily accessible to parents or teachers. Focusing on the earth's useful and decorative treasures, this book includes information on a selection of gases, solids and liquids, the properties of natural and man-made materials, how they are used and the importance of conserving them for the future. Through its topic approach, the book covers aspects of the National Science Curriculum for Key Stage 1 (levels 1-3) for the following attainment targets: AT1 Exploration of Science; AT5 Human Influences on the Earth; AT6 Types and Uses of Materials.
