1914. British forces are desperately trying to hold off the German soldiers in France. Star shells – commonly called ‘starlight” – illuminate the chaos in the trenches below. Like so many other men, Jim Hickman and Bertie Murphy are plunged into this nightmare and unbeknownst to them, a terrible tragedy is looming... As the war progresses, Jim receives honor after honor, whilst Bertie sinks deep into depression. And back home Poppy, the girl they both love, must choose between the two men...that is, if they ever come back alive. As the trio is trapped in physical and mental torment, a terrible tragedy befalls them... Wilcox draws upon a fascinating family history. His father and six uncles all fought in and survived the trenches of WWI, garnering a Victoria Cross among other decorations during the conflict.

According to author JOHN WOLCOX, an inability to do sums and a nascent talent to string words together steered him towards journalism – that and the desire to wear a trench coat, belted with a knot, just like Bogart. After a number of years working as a journalist, he was lured into industry. In the mid-nineties he sold his company in order to devote himself to his first love, writing. His Simon Fonthill novels have been published to high acclaim and he has also published two works of non-fiction.Review:
Overall, a thought-provoking and atmospheric read which is recommended. (Historical Novels Review)
