The seventh edition of this textbook, to which Dr John Ward-Smith contributes for the first time, presents the basic principles of the mechanics of fluids. It includes the material on this subject which is needed for an honours-degree course in civil or mechanical engineering, in addition to providing relevant material for undergraduate courses in aeronautical and chemical engineering. Emphasis is given to an understanding of fluid flow and its engineering applications, rather than to mathematical techniques.;The text moves from the simple to the complex and from the familiar to the unfamiliar. The basic conventions of SI units are used throughout and there are many worked examples. The book is essentially self-contained but, where appropriate, reference is made to more detailed or advanced accounts of particular topics. End-of-chapter problems, with answers, are included.;A corresponding solutions manual is available for lecturers.
