Some supplementary material has been added to this edition to bring it into line with the national curriculum requirements for science. One of the objectives of the course is to enhance scientific experience through investigative experimentation. The practical work in each section aims to meet this ideal where possible, but where the additional time required is not available, a more prescriptive approach is used. The text has been designed to lead students to adopt safe working practices. The social, economic and technological aspects of science are emphasized throughout.
