Doris Dörrie’s was born in Hanover in 1955. She studied drama in the United States and continued her studies at the Academy of Television and Film in Munich where she now lives and works. Her remarkable body of work includes ten feature films, including the groundbreaking Men which was a huge hit with audiences and critics alike, seven volumes of short stories, a novel, and three children's books. She consistently takes a penetrating look at contemporary life and the nature of human relationships. With piercing wit, Dörrie analyses her characters' prejudices and personal attitudes as well as their struggles with money, success, unemployment, crime, revenge, passion, and, of course, love. "I have always been most interested in the comic within the tragic," Dörrie has said. "For me it is the only possible form of survival, to develop one's sense of comedy to such a degree that it enables one to endure all that occurs in the world."

During the year 2000 she released her debut novel in Germany, directed a feature film, Enlightenment Guaranteed, and wrote a play. In the forthcoming year she will be stage directing Mozart’s "Cosi fan Tutte" at the State Opera Unter den Linden, in Berlin.

Fred Kaufmann, world-weary, disillusioned husband of tidy-minded, thoroughly competent Claudia, is in the midst of a classic midlife crisis. Long ago exchanging his dreams of being a celebrated film director - even he could see he didn t have what it takes - he settled for marriage to Claudia, the owner of a successful vegetarian take-away. But Claudia has sold out to a fast-food chain and now Fred finds himself adrift - materially successful, yes, but spiritually dissatisfied. Claudia finds a guru and the guru finds their teenage daughter. So, in attempt to wean Franka of her infatuation with the guru by exposing her to a large amount of brown rice and serious Buddhism, Frank and family set out on a disastrous journey to the meditation centre in the south of France.
