A study of one of the most prominent and versatile writers of the early seventeenth century. Middleton collaborated with several contemporaries including, Dekker, Shakespeare and Rowley and a chapter is devoted to each of these. Dekker and Middleton's 'The Roaring Girl' is examined in detail as is his intertextual relations with Shakespeare and, arguably his masterpiece 'The Changeling' written with Rowley. This is the first study of Middleton to emphasize his collaborative relationships and the intertextual elements of the plays, pageants, poems, and pamphlets. Mark Hutchings is a lecturer in English at the University of Reading, specialising in early modern drama in performance. Previous publications include articles, book chapters, and notes on early modern drama, especially the representation of Turks on the stage; editor of Three Jacobean 'Turkish' Plays Manchester University Press, forthcoming).
