Military and security organizations are rebuilding the social and political space in which we live. Anyone who wants to understand this process should read this book. It is not only a key to deciphering Israeli policies in Palestine, but also one of the clearest explanations that I have ever read on how important Israel/Palestine is in the world. (Shir Hever, author of The Political Economy of Israel's Occupation (Pluto, 2010))
Jeff Halper's book addresses with clarity and structure one of the most complex and yet extremely important topics of the securitization of our society. His book has opened my eyes, and was a fascinating read. (Shir Hever, author of The Political Economy of Israel's Occupation (Pluto, 2010))
War Against the People is a disturbing insight into the new phenomenon of the 'securocratic' war in the modern policed world. A subliminal form of state warfare which creates fear amongst the population, it functions by suggesting the enemy (whether real or imaginary) exists inside the city limits. An atmosphere of fear is created through the weaving of ideological fabrications which in turn form an excuse for the state to intensify military apparatus in everyday civilian life.
Jeff Halper sheds light onto this calculated practice. Starting with the Israeli state, he uses extensive first-hand research to reveal the extent to which the military apparatus has become part of everyday life for whole sections of cities in the region. He reveals the use of sophisticated sensors, information databases on civilian activity, automated targeting systems and unmanned drones. Combined, these systems affect civilian lives both physically and virtually. Halper shows us how the Palestinian Occupied Territories have become a veritable laboratory.
Halper also shows how this method of war is in fact global - the major capitalist powers and corporations worldwide combine militaries, security agencies and police forces into an effective instrument of what he calls 'global pacification'. War Against The People is a bold attempt to shine a light on these horrific, hidden practices.
