Presley and Banks have organized their book into six chapters, with each chapter covering an integral part of the county's history. From the start, the county's bedrock has been agriculture. Working the Land, Reaping the Harvest provides vivid images of the challenges and rewards of rural life. Men and women with imagination and drive developed commercial enterprises, and their achievements appear in Taking Care of Business. The pioneers established a network of schools, a subject addressed in A Time to Learn. The section pertaining to local architecture, If Walls Could Speak, explores early log cabins, charming wood-frame churches, and interesting structures located throughout the county.
