This book traces the evolution of lodging in the area from the late 1700s to the present. The various types of accommodations included log cabins; lodging in rail, coal, and lumber communities; picturesque stagecoach stops; state parks; bed-and-breakfasts; and opulent mineral springs hotels. During the Civil War, many of the springs hotels and stagecoach stops were used for army hospitals and headquarters. This volume provides glimpses of quaint towns such as Bramwell, Fayetteville, Union, and Lewisburg, as well as the more commercial towns of Princeton, Bluefield, Hinton, Beckley, Glen Jean, Gary, Cass, Ronceverte, Marlinton, Coalwood, Rainelle, and Glen Rogers.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

This is the third book that Ed Robinson has authored for Arcadia Publishing. Formerly he was an international aviation economist with both private industry and the federal government in Washington, D.C. Since retiring, he resides in Princeton with his wife, Susan. Robinson has selected 200 vintage photographs from varied sources, including the National Park Service, the West Virginia State Archives, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the Eastern Regional Coal Archives, county historical societies, and private collections, to tell the fascinating story of historic lodging in southern West Virginia.
