Inhaltsangabe

A celebration of the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Australia (2001). Rumours of the discovery of specimens of gold had been circulating throughout the colonies for many years before the Australian rush began in 1851. The discovery of gold brought instant wealth to the new colony, through migration, capital investment, trade and royalties paid by the Crown. At the same time, the labouring class were able to work independently. But the government acted swiftly to curtail the independence of the labouring class. The imposition of a hefty licence fee on all diggers only served to establish a system of corruption and deceptive bureaucracy. In Victoria the government's harsh stance over miners' licences and its enforcement by corrupt police culminated in violence. On a Sunday morning in December 1854 British troopers attacked a crude stockade built by the diggers on the Eureka field near Ballarat.
