This special publication provides guidance to design professionals and building owners or users on inherent security, that is security provided by site layout, building layout and detailed design, in the design or refurbishment of non-residential buildings. It focuses on security issues, rather than security measures, with the intention of ensuring that security is considered as a fundamental performance requirement alongside other basic requirements at an early stage in the design process.
The book gives an overview of and approach to building security, and then includes the following topics: security issues in building design (covering forced entry, violence, theft, vehicle security, access and damage to buildings); security issues in selected building types; and notes on security measures. As far as possible the guidance is based on research findings, augmented where appropriate by generally accepted current practice.
