Designed to complement the annualThe Times Guide Night Sky , this book describes and explains the objects in the night sky visible to the naked eye, and other phenomena such as planetary movements and eclipses.
The book is divided into nine sections.
The Celestial Sphere: everything we see at night appears within the celestial sphere; this section explains the terms used to describe parts of the night sky.
The Stars: describes different types of stars, constellations, galaxies, clusters, novae and supernovae, as well as individual stars of particular importance.
The Sun, Seasons and Time: explains how the sun influences our lives in terms of timekeeping, the length of days and nights throughout the different seasons and at different degrees of longitude and latitude.
The Moon: looks at the phases of the Moon, its orbit, altitude and how it changes throughout the year.
Eclipses of the Sun and Moon: describes the conditions necessary for both lunar and solar eclipses and how to observe them
The Planets: explains how to follow the changing positions of the planets and gives information on each one in our solar system.
Comets, Asteroids and Meteors: gives information on each of these phenomena.
Other Night Sky Phenomena: aurorae, noctilucent clouds, artificial satellites.
Observing the Night Sky: hints and tips on the best way to see and photographs the objects described in this book.
