George Pearce was working as a teacher in West Bromwich when war was declared in 1939. Two years later he was called up, joining the RAF and leaving behind his wife and two young children, Gordon and Gillian. Until demob in 1946 George would occupy spare minutes by writing poems, and many of his letters home contained delightful nonsense verse to entertain his children. Now, almost twenty-five years after George's death in 1990, and about seventy years since they were first written, his son Gordon has collected these poems together in affectionate tribute to his memory.
