This pioneer work deals with the red-clay Art potteries that operated in the Torquay district of South Devon from 1870 to 1960. It is the first book to be devoted entirely to the subject, and is the outcoeme of many years' original research. As the sub-title indicates, it traces the history of the various firms and the changing styles of their products from the time when Watcombe terracotta was thought worthy of presentation to Queen Victoria to the later slip and underglaze decorated wares with their 'Cottage', 'Kingfisher', and other popular designs. In the appendices will be found a chronological chart of the old Torquay factories, together with a list of the decoration codes used by the Aller Vale Pottery and a selection of over 100 typical mottoes and inscriptions. The text is supported by 95 'marks', many of them not recorded elsewhere, 140 black-and-white photographs, 6 colour plates, and numerous pen-and-ink sketches.
