This is the fourth book of a five-year science course. Books 4 and 5 cover the Programmes of Study for Key Stage 4. Following on from the Key Stage 3 course, "Understanding Science", the Key Stage 4 volumes have been written for a wide ability range and cover all the process skills and knowledge and understanding outlined in the National Curriculum Programmes of Study and Statements of Attainment. They include topics intended to encourage communication and an awareness of the applications and economic, social and technological implications of science. For each of the five years there is a Pupils' Book and accompanying Teachers' Resource Book. The Pupils' Books offer three elements to cater for a full range of abilities: the core - suitable for all; reinforcement - offering exercises that reinforce the core material at the same level; and extensions - one per topic, designed to develop material for the more able. Each book is presented in a large open format that makes full use of colour photographs, diagrams and cartoons; is organised into units, each dealing with an important content area; stresses key skills throughout, ranging from general writing and practical skills to those involving experimental design, hypothesising and IT; and introduces a wide range of open-ended problems and technological issues to encourage discussion.
