The pharmacokinetic properties of individual drugs are described in most reference books on drug therapy. This introduction aims to lay the foundations for understanding and using these descriptions. It explains the concepts of the subject and discusses the physiological and biochemical processes that govern drug and metabolite concentrations within the body. It also defines area under the curve and the pharmacokinetic constants, illustrates how they are used and outlines methods for calculating their values. This book emphasizes average concentrations and describes the changes in the simplest, adequate terms. Curve fitting models with two or more compartments are introduced briefly in the last two supplements but these topics may be omitted from an introductory course.
