The classification of back pain syndromes has presented difficulties to clinicians and research workers in this field. This publication addresses this problem and results from a symposium organized by the Society for Back Pain Research in March 1989. The papers are presented in two groups. The first group of papers are by specialist in various fields giving their view on the classification of patients that present to them, and some of the statistical techniques that may be used to help disentangle this problem. The second group are research papers presented to the Society, many of which describe research in progress. It is hoped that this book will provide a useful background to clinicains and others planning research in this field. It aims to give clinicians in several disciplines a basis for developing their own ideas on the application of classification to the wide variety of back pain complaints that they may see in the surgery and outpatients departments.
