Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) was one of the most brilliant portrait painters of the eighteenth century, surpassing his great rival Reynolds with his ability to capture a likeness and in his superb handling of paint. Nicola Kalinsky is curator of the College Art Collections at University College, London. She was previously Keeper at Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, where she co-authored catalogues on Gainsborough (1998) and Le Brun (1990).
