This volume contains an account of the excavation of settlement and cemetery areas at El-Ashmunein during the second stage of the British Museum project at the site. The results of the excavation constitute a significant addition to the archaeology of the ancient city and indicate that the potential for new discoveries at the site is far from being exhausted. Spencer describes the two major areas of interest revealed by excavations: a settlement of the Third Intermediate Period and a walled cemetery dating to c.2000 BC. In addition to a description of the archaeology, this volume also includes a complete catalogue of the objects discovered, including a large collection of pottery.

This volume contains a full account of the work carried out by the British Museum during the second half of a ten-year excavation at El-Ashmunein. During this time selected areas in the town-mound were examined to study the stratified settlement deposits. The principal discoveries were a settlement of 950-650 BC and an enclosed cemetary of the First Intermediate Period, containing some of the earliest remains so far found at the site.
