Colour paintings of birds, b/w illustrations, maps, bibliography. Gilt bird motif to blue cloth, upper board and spine titled in gilt. Very slight stains to cloth but very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. "The encyclopaedia was first published in monthly parts, under the title Encyclopedia voor de Vogelliefhebber ["The Bird Fancier's Encyclopaedia"], commencing in 1964, and subsequently in three bound volumes. They found a ready market and are now appearing in several other languages." "Leading ornithologists and aviculturists from all parts of the world were invited to write on the groups of birds on which they are the recognized authorities. The distinguished team of writers includes Dr. J. Delacour, J. Eyckens, Carl Naether, Robert L. Busenbark, Henry J. Bates, Dr. E. Nieboer, C. af Enehjelm, Joseph Forshaw, Dr. Kurt Kolar and G. Radtke. The late Mr. K.A. Norris, Chairman of the British Aviculturists Club .was one of the editors of the original Dutch publication. The appearance .of the English edition is the result of extensive research and revision on his part, and he added additional descriptions and detail. .It describes species from seventeen orders. The second volume is largely devoted to .the Parrot Family .and includes the Cuculiformes, Strigiformes and Caprimulgiformes. The third volume covers small perching birds, Piciformes, Passeriformes and four other Orders." This volume begins with the following chapters: Preface by K.A. Norris; A brief review of the Class Aves by A. Rutgers; Names and classification by Peter Scott; The bird population of the world; Notes on bird ecology as applied to planted aviaries, by Roland W. Hawkins; The diseases of cage and aviary birds, by Christine M. Startup, M.R.C.V.S. The articles on the species follow, in the order "adopted by Peters in his Check List of Birds of the World." A very good set, however the d.j.s. have stuck to the covers in places due to water (in some places the residue of the covers have blemished the covers and in other instances we have left the d.j.s. stuck to the covers, rather than detaching them), 2 vols. have minor wear along the bottom edges, and vol. 1 has a half inch dig in the cloth on the front panel at the bottom, in very good d.j.s. that have a few small tears and a chip at the bottom of the front panel of volume one. Even though there was water damage to the covers and the d.j.s. there is absolutely no smell. All volumes are tight and exceptionally clean inside. There are 87 full page color plates and over 400 black-and-white illustrations. The original edition was published in the Dutch language in 1964-68. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
