Inhaltsangabe

This book contains a collection of Rowland Hilder's finest British landscapes, some of which have never been published before. They clearly show Hilder's love of the skies, fields, rivers, farms, hills and valleys of his native land. Originally, Rowland wanted to be a marine artist and his talent in this area was demonstrated early on by stunning Thames-side drawings, many made whilst still at Goldsmiths College. These images show an astonishing combination of virtuoso draughtsmanship and pictorial atmosphere, traits which appear again and again in his later work. After Goldsmiths, Hilder went on to discover his talent for capturing the unique character of the British countryside and it is about all his scenes of Kent, particularly in the winter, which have made his work so recognisable. The images in this book are introduced to the reader by Rado Klose, Hilder's son-in-law. Rado provides the reader with a personal insight into the private family man as well as into the well-known artist. Klose, whom among many things is a photographer, worked closely with Rowland for many years, and along with the text, he has provided the photographs of all the images in this book.
